Air India pilot caught shoplifting at Sydney airport

Captain Rohit Bhasin, who is the Regional Director and a senior commander of Air India, has been left feeling ashamed in a consequence after he has been allegedly caught shoplifting at the dutyfree shop at Sydney airport. The news indeed came as a major blow and embarrassment to the national aviation carrier.

In just a couple of hours, Mr Bhasin was supposed to operate the Air India flight AI 301, scheduled to fly from Sydney to Delhi. But his alleged crime over shoplifting a wallet at one of the stores in the airport has shocked the airline management and he was suspended over the charges. The pilot has also been asked to submit his identification card with the national carrier. Bhasin was asked to not enter Air India’s office premises without the written permission of the management. Also, the thorough investigation is yet to be constituted as Bhasin’s well-wishers argue that a CCTV footage should be provided and he was unnecessarily hassled.

“Air India lays the highest stress on the proper conduct of its staff and has a zero-tolerance policy towards acts of impropriety. There is an initial report of one of its captains Mr Rohit Bhasin who is also working as a regional director picking up a wallet from a duty-free shop in Sydney. Air India has instituted an enquiry into this incident and has placed the Captain under suspension,” the statement from the Airlines read.

Opinionatedly, we wonder why would a senior pilot ever need shoplifting unless he or she is in a dire financial strait. And that is almost impossible as a Regional Director is usually paid Rs 1 crore annually. No matter what, Rohit Bhasin is now facing charges and the investigation will bring out the truth from the moment.
