Kanwar Yatra cancelled in view of Covid-19: Uttarakhand CM

It is known news that the Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Modi led Centre over the government’s decision of allowing the Kanwar Yatra amid the pandemic.

Citing Uttarakhand’s move to suspend the Kanwar Yatra, the apex court said it was a little worried by Uttar Pradesh’s decision to allow the pilgrimage despite widespread fears of a third wave of Covid-19.

Now, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday said the decision to cancel this year’s Yatra was taken to save the lives of people during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“We have cancelled Kanwar Yatra in our state because protecting people’s lives is our priority,” he said.

The Uttarakhand Police on July 15 advised people not to visit Haridwar because of coronavirus concerns. State Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar said they will organise a meeting with all districts sharing borders with bordering states to prevent ‘Kanwars’ from coming to Haridwar.
