The 19 days of stalemate situation in Maharashtra politics has taken a drastic turn this evening. President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the proclamation for President’s rule in Maharashtra, after receiving the recommendation from the centre and the state Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
With President’s rule imposed, any party can approach the Governor with the letter of support of 145 MLAs to form the government in future. The BJP currently has 105 MLAs and is currently holding the interim government.
After the BJP and Shiv Sena failed to show the required majority to form the government, the Governor had given a deadline to the NCP. However, the NCP and Congress could not reach a consensus to form a coalition government.
Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Sonia Gandhi, and other leaders of the three parties have been in talks to explore the possibility of forming the government. Meanwhile, the Modi sarkar’s decision to recommend the President’s rule has been receiving severe criticism from the opposition parties.
While Congress called the move a “blatant abuse of the presidential rule,” the NCP is moving the Supreme Court against the rule since it has been imposed even before the Governor’s deadline of November 12 at 7:30 pm.
