The Big Blunder In Mahanati

No doubt, Mahanati has been declared as the masterpiece by the critics. Even audiences are appreciating the film alike.

But not many have pointed that there is a one glaring error in the classic. In the film, there is a scene where Savitri (Keerthy Suresh) shoots for a small role in the movie Gorintaku during the lull phase of her career. After her shoot is completed, she walks through the sets and no one notices such a great actor. Even the unit who takes care of artistes ignores her. That’s when SV Rangarao (Mohan Babu) spots her and invites her to have lunch with him. SVR scolds the production unit for ignoring such a great actor and philanthropist who had once fed many including the junior artistes. This is an iconic scene and the dialogues of SVR (Mohan Babu) added more value to this particular scene.

But here is the missing logic. Originally, Gorintaku was shot in 1979. But the fact is that SV Ranga Rao had died in 1974 itself. So, this is a big blunder in Mahanti. When director Nag Ashwin was asked about it, he nodded saying it was a mistake. Admitting it, Nag Ashwin said it was a deliberate attempt.

He explained that the originally Savitri had faced such issue during Gorintaku and it was Gummadi but not SVR who offered her to have lunch with him. Since director had no time to introduce another character of Gummadi and already SVR was an established character, after much-thought, director Nag Ashwin said he had taken the cinematic liberty. He even thought of having this scene with KV Reddy or Chakrapani but even both of them had died by then. Since SVR is also a powerful character, Nag Ashwin said he opted for SVR to have that scene with Savitri in Mahanati.

Although this is a mistake, it is a sweet mistake which made the movie more connecting. This particular scene sheds light on the human emotions, human relations with and without money.
And here is the dialogue of SVR (Mohan Babu) in the movie, “Annam Pette Vadi Vungarallanu Kuda Kotteyalani Chuse Samajam Idi”. Needless to say that this is heart-melting scene from Mahanati.
