Two of the south’s biggest softcore film stars are none other than Silk Smitha and Shakeela. Both have a Telugu connection, as Vijayalakshmi aka Silk happens to be from Eluru in West Godavari district, while Shakeela Begum also spent her childhood in Nellore.
Cut to the topic, actually there is a scene in ‘Dirty Picture’, the unofficial biopic of Silk Smitha on which Bollywood cashed big time, where Silk says to Shakeela, “So you’re Shakeela. You will never become Silk”. Since then everyone believes that there is a hardcore rivalry between these two. So what is the truth?
“No, There is no truth in that. I’ve seen my first success in 1995 through Silk Smitha’s ‘Play Girls’ movie, where I’ve played her younger sister. The very next year she has passed away. So how come we have any rivalry?” said Shakeela, talking about her equation with Silk.
In a way, it looks like, the death of Silk Smitha has helped Shakeela reach stardom but not that she dethroned her.
