Ever since the Citizenship Amendment Bill (also called CAA) got the Parliament, there is a wide range protest all over the country. From December to till date, from public places to central universities, people, students and politicians staged protest. Despite these protests, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that the BJP government will bring a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) as part of CAA.
Contrary to Shah’s comments, the union home ministry said that it has not taken any decision on NRC yet. The Parliament opened for budget sessions on Monday and oppositions leaders from both Upper and Lower house have served notices on Citizenship Act (CAA), NRC and National Population Register (NPR).
In reply to these notices, Ministry of Home Affairs MoS Nityanand Rai said in a written format to the Lok Sabha informed that till now the centre has not taken any decision to prepare NRC at the national level. But the BJP government has plans to bring NRC by 2024.
