Lockdown Trauma: Anxiety Disorders For Indian Women

But from the past 6 months everything has stalled. Though the lockdown is relaxed, the fear that has engulfed the minds and the situation that can make anyone prone to Covid-19 has made many confine to their homes.

Initially during the lockdown many women have started learning new dishes and enjoyed the vacation kind of life. They took the situation positively for finding time to spend with family members. But slowly the happiness is waning and gloominess is surrounding a few.

The people who are working from home have little or no complaint, but the non-working women have been facing anxiety disorders from the past few weeks, as per some psychiatrists in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru.

“The situation is worse in cities when compared to towns and villages. The women who are dependent on social moving and past-time relaxation are worst affected. They have no atmosphere to party like before or attend gala wedding events. They don’t know the actual reason for their mental disorder but are complaining of palpitations, unknown fear and anxiety. We are prescribing moderate medicines for some cases, but for the others we are suggesting lifestyle changes like aerobics”, says Dr Arun Kumar, a psychiatrist from Chennai.

“Some women who are especially home makers are in fear that Covid may attack them anytime. Those who are exposed to social media are getting more into this phobia. Though we are telling them that not everyone gets it and even among the Covid positives 98% cases are not fatal, they are saying that they are fearing about falling in the 2% category”, says Dr Anupama Saxena, from Mumbai.

“Anxiety disorder may be caused by any reason. It can be due to hormonal imbalance or while going through post trauma symptoms. Some women who fought with Covid and got rid of it with almost no symptoms also are getting affected by anxiety with the fear of getting re affected. We are telling them that antibodies produced among the Covid warriors will shield them forever. They are asking what if they lose their antibodies. Their fear searches for a question, but their question is not the reason for fear. All these questions never arise in mind once life comes to normalcy as in 2019. That can be possible only after the arrival of vaccines or a natural flattening of the Covid curve”, says Dr Poornachand.

“Healthy diet and regular exercise are the best solution to get rid of any temporary mental disorder. One should love oneself more than anything else. We are born not just to live but to live happily. The happiness is within us. It will never come from outside. We should learn to ignite the happiness sleeping within us. That is possible only with self love, self care and willingness to lead a happy life”, says Dr Ayodhya Kumar, a general physician.
