The Bharatiya Janata Party has been making tall claims that it is the only potential alternative to Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Telangana and had all the chances of coming to power in 2023 assembly elections.
But unfortunately, the party has not been able to find a suitable leader who can replace sitting state unit president Dr K Laxman.
The BJP leadership at the Centre is contemplating appointing by this month-end a new president for the Telangana unit who can lead the party to victory in the next elections.
There are at least half a dozen applicants for the post – like party national secretary P Muralidhar Rao, Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjaya, former MP A P Jitender Reddy, former minister from Gadwal D K Aruna, Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind and former state unit president N Indrasena Reddy.
However, BJP national leaders like Amit Shah and J P Nadda are not happy with any of these leaders, as they do not have enough strength and acceptability across the state as the party president.
Sources said the party might continue existing leader Dr Laxman for some more time as the Telangana unit chief and give him more powers.
Though initially, the party leadership thought of selecting the party president through a democratic process – taking opinions from booth-level, mandal-level and district-level committees, it dropped the plan due to lack of time, sources said.
