Following the Central Bureau of Investigation’s petition filed in the Supreme Court requesting an urgent hearing pertaining to the investigation in the Chit-fund scams of West Bengal, the Supreme Court today rejected the CBI’s plea. Stating that the Apex Court did not find anything that indicates “destruction of evidence by Kolkata Police Chief” as alleged by the CBI, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that there is no proof in the application yet.
This plea was filed by the CBI just hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Banerjee’s face-off with the Central government began, following CBI officers’ attempts to question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in Sharada and Rose Valley chit fund scams.
However, the CBI now planning to seek contempt proceedings against West Bengal Chief Secretary and the State DGP apart from an order, compelling Rajeev Kumar to cooperate in the investigation. The petition was filed by the CBI over “non-cooperation” of the West Bengal government after CBI officials were details by the state police. Meanwhile, the CBI in its petition complained that the Rajeev Kumar was sitting in a dharna organized by West Bengal CM.
Responding to the petition, Gogoi asked the CBI “What was the urgency in hearing this petition and added that and “there was nothing in the Centre’s interim application on the destruction of evidence.” The Supreme Court posted the matter to tomorrow morning.
