US Senator and Democratic Party’s presidential nominee Bernie Sanders has, on Wednesday, criticised American President Donald Trump’s response to violence that erupted in New Delhi during his India tour.
Taking a swipe at Trump for calling it “a failure of leadership on human rights”, Bernie tweeted a Washington Post’s article with his comment- “Over 200 million Muslims call India home. Widespread anti-Muslim mob violence has killed at least 27 and injured many more. Trump responds by saying, “That’s up to India.” This is a failure of leadership on human rights.”
This tweeted has surprisingly attracted a reply from Karnataka’s BJP leader BL Santosh who said “How much ever neutral we wish to be you compel us to play a role in presidential elections. Sorry to say so… But you are compelling us”. However, he later deleted the tweet after social media began to debate and discuss it.
Even before Bernie responded over the Delhi violence, Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren said “It’s important to strengthen relationships with democratic partners like India. But we must be able to speak truthfully about our values, including religious freedom and freedom of expression, and violence against peaceful protesters is never acceptable.” Other key people who reacted condemned the Delhi violence include Congressman Alan Lowenthal, Congresswomen Pramila Jayapal and Rashida Talib.
