India’s GDP has dropped to 5% which is an all-time low over the past 6 years. Amid such a deep economic slowdown, the Modi-led government is desperately taking some drastic moves to improve the situation.
In this scenario, the Finance Ministry has decided to merge the iconic Andhra Bank with Corporation Bank and the Union Bank of India. Needless to say, this move has given raise to several concerns related to the self respect and sentiments of the Telugus.
Addressing these concerns, former AP CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In his letter, Babu first appreciated the various measures being taken by the Finance Ministry to boost up the country’s economy.
Babu also urged Nirmala to not change Andhra Bank’s name. “Andhra Bank has been serving Telugu people for decades and earned our trust. Telugu people are not able to digest Andhra Bank’s merger. Please do not merge Andhra Bank. And if the merger is inevitable, at least do not change the bank’s name,” Babu urged Sitharaman.
While the former CM is the first to put his word across, it remains to be seen whether both the Telugu CMs KCR and Jagan, who have their own equation with Modi, will fight for Andhra Bank’s name.
It may be worth mentioning that during the separate Telangana movement, there were demands by the pro-Telangana activists to split Andhra Bank into two and rename the Telangana wing as Telangana Bank. However, Andhra Bank remained unchanged until now.
