Temple-Masjid controversies are not new in India. The controversies have been going on for centuries. The Ayodhya dispute was settled and two such issues are yet to be settled. The controversy surrounding the temple city Varanasi involving the Gyanvapi Masjid is in discussion now. All eyes are now on the controversy.
The district court is slated to give its verdict on the issue today. Amid this, security forces were deployed in big numbers as a safety measure to see that no unwanted scenes take place. Both parties in the issue are confident that they would get a favorable verdict.
The issue reached the court after five women filed a petition to seek directives to offer prayers to the deities near the Gyanvapi Masjid outwall. The petitioners say that the Masjid was constructed after demolishing the existing temple. Stating the same, they filed the petition.
After the petition was filed, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee countered the claims saying that the Gyanvapi Masjid belongs to the Waqf board and the property is owned by the board. The body also questioned how the plea can be maintained.
The Varanasi-Gyanvapi Masjid issue became a discussion among people when a lower court gave its nod for the survey inside the Masjid complex. The Survey team said that it found a Shivling kind of structure. However, the Muslim side opposed it and said that there is nothing like Shivling.
The Muslim side knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court to challenge this. However, the Apex Court maintained that the issue is still pending with the district court and it will accept the petition after the district court gives a verdict. The district court heard the petition earlier and reserved its verdict till the 12th of this month.
The earlier mentioned date is today and everyone is eagerly waiting to know what the district court will say in the verdict. If the verdict comes against the Muslim side then the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee will surely challenge it in a higher court and Supreme Court as well. Let us wait and see what happens here with the controversy.
