The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government has withdrawn all the remaining cases pending against the Kapu activists, who had agitated in 2016 for inclusion of the community in BC category and extension of reservations to them.
Orders to this effect were issued by state principal secretary (home) Kumar Viswajeet on Thursday. The order mentions each and every case registered against the pro-Kapu agitators along with the names of police stations where they were registered.
Biswajeet said the cases pertained to all the agitations held between January 2016 to March 2019. Not only the violation agitation that occurred at Tuni in East Godavari on February 1, 2016, all the other cases pertaining to the reservation movement would be withdrawn.
With this, no case will be pending against the Kapu agitators, including former minister and Kapu strongman Mudragada Padmanabham. In all, 161 cases filed in various police stations would be lifted, the home secretary said.
Earlier in July 2020, the Jagan government withdrew prosecutions related to Tuni arson in 2016 during the Kapu reservation stir. As many as 51 cases registered in connection with the Kapu Reservation agitation at Tuni were withdrawn then.
The government had ordered inquiries by Crime Investigation Department (CID) after agitators torched Ratnachal Express in Tuni. Several YSRC leaders were grilled by the CID as suspects for alleged conspiracy in the issue.
