Madras High Court dismisses actor Suriya’s plea

The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed the writ petition filed by Kollywood star Suriya, seeking waiver of interest for the income tax assessment for two financial years (2007-2009).

As per reports, in 2010, the Income Tax Department officials conducted simultaneous searches on the actor’s houses and business premises and asked him to pay Rs 3.11 crore after assessment.

The star actor moved the case to the High Court in 2018, seeking exemption from the waiver of interest for the income tax assessment.

On Tuesday, August 17, Judge SM Subramaniam dismissed Suriya’s case after hearing the IT department’s argument, which said that since the actor did not fully cooperate with the IT assessment process, they do not entitle him to an interest deduction.

On the work front, Suriya will be seen next in Jai Bhim. He also has Pandiraj’s Etharkkum Thunindhavan and Vetrimaaran’s Vaadi Vaasal in the pipeline.
