It is well known that used items of Mahatma Gandhi occasionally come up for auction. Now, the pocket watch used by Gandhi was sold for Rs 11,82,375 (12,000 pounds) at an auction in Britain. The watch is estimated to be worth up to £10,000, but it beat that price at East Bristol Auctions on Friday.
Gandhi presented the watch in 1944 in gratitude for the love shown to him by a man. The man’s grandson recently put the watch up for auction. Auctioneer Andrew Stowe said the buyer was a private collector based in the United States.”After our incredible sale of Gandhi’s Glasses back in August, we were inundated with requests for items relating to him,” Andrew Stowe said.
As a thank-you for his devotion, Gandhi gave the pocket watch to Mohanlal Sharma, a carpenter in 1944, and it was passed to his grandson in 1975.
