Ever since Vaana and Bangaram actress Meera Chopra tweeted the other day that she doesn’t know who NTR was and that she is not his fan, a section of NTR fans have been trolling her brutally, using highly derogatory language, and even gave her rape and death threats. This prompted Meera to file a complaint against several NTR fans, and even the National Council for Women (NCW) has taken the matter seriously.
While Tarak fans are attacking Meera, they are simultaneously being severely criticised by the fans of all other Tollywood stars and even the media for their unruly and disgusting behaviour towards a popular female actor. But the question now is – why only blaming NTR fans? The truth is that even the fans of other Tollywood stars are no different than these NTR fans.
There have been several instances where fans of leading Tollywood stars abused people, especially women, on social media. Star heroine Samantha was not spared by Mahesh Babu fans for her comments on 1 Nenokkadine’s poster. Also, Pawan fans gave rape and death threats to Sri Reddy when she made controversial comments on the Powerstar. Even Allu Arjun fans made rape and death threats to a Malayali film critic for her negative review for Naa Peru Surya. Most recently, NTR fans abused Kajal Aggarwal for not using a specific birthday hashtag while wishing him on Twitter.
Most of these abusive fans often have their favorite stars’ pictures as their display pictures on their social media profiles. Hence, not only they land themselves in troubles, but they are also bringing bad reputation to their heroes with their sick behaviour.
The Meera Chopra controversy is not a one-off incident, but just another eye-opener to Tollywood. Whether or not stars who give lectures on women empowerment in their films and on public platforms act now and reign in their unruly fans remains to be seen
