Mulayam backs Modi as PM again, shocks Opposition

Springing up a surprise in the Parliament, Samajwadi Party veteran leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statement could bring trouble to the Grand Alliance against the BJP government. In a statement in the Parliament on the last day of the Budget Session, Mulayam said: “PM ko badhaai dena chahta hun ki PM ne sabko saath lekar chalne ki koshish ki hai. Main kehna chahta hun ki saare sadaysa phir se jeet kar aayen, aur aap (PM) dobara pradhan mantri banein (I hope Narendra Modi returns as Prime Minister as he has taken care of all sections of people).”

While this statement won loud applause from the BJP MPs and its allies, Narendra Modi silently smiled and thanked Mulayam for his gesture. However, to the Opposition parties, his statement came as a surprise. Mulayam sat beside former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi when he made the statement and added that he hopes to see the same set of MPs in the next session of Parliament, stating that he has enjoyed this innings.

Mulayam Singh’s statements come a day after TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Deeksha in New Delhi which brought all the anti-BJP parties together, where the SP supremo criticised the Modi government. On the other hand, he also made the statements after his son, Akhilesh Yadav, was grounded by UP government.

At a time when Samajwadi Party has decided to strike an alliance with Mayawati’s BSP in Uttar Pradesh against the BJP, Mulayam’s statements have began creating jitters within the regional allies of the Grand opposition and his view on backing Modi as the Prime Minister again.
