Mumbai court summons Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ defamation suit

Although Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ had been a much hyped film, it remained in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A legal tussle is still prevailing and seem to have not resolved yet. In response to a defamation suit, an additional chief metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai issued summons against Alia Bhatt and film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali against the ‘negative portrayal’ of the lead characters in the on-screen adaptation.

The suit in question has been lodged by Baburao Shah, who is the adopted son of Gangubai. He alleged that ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is most likely going to potray their family with false facts in bad light and that it is ethically wrong. The film is developed based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai and he has also been summoned in this case.

The court has ordained Bhatt and Bhansali to submit their response in the issue. Recently, Maharashtra Congress MLA Amin Patel demanded that the title of the film be changed, purporting that it tarnishes the name of Kathiawad city. He had also urged the state government to probe the matter while speaking in the state assembly.
