Lady superstar Nayanthara released her 75th film ‘Annapoorani’ with the tagline ‘The Goddess Of Food’ was released in December. Top actors like Satyaraj, KS Ravikumar, Jai and others played key roles in this movie. It was released on Netflix within a few weeks and a lot of Hindu organizations found the film’s content problematic. Due to the severe backlash, it was taken out of Netflix.
After a brief gap, the movie is back on Netflix again. Interestingly, it will not be available in India but people in other countries can watch it on Netflix from 9th August. Nayan played the role of a Brahmin girl who hails from an orthodox family. She wants to become India’s best chef while her father is against it. How she overcomes all the hurdles and gets what she wants forms the crux of the story.
Responding to the backlash, Zee Studios has officially released a letter apologizing to VHP and announcing its removal from Netflix until the required parts are edited back in January. Nayan is shown as a Brahmin woman who cooks non-vegetarian food in order to win the competition. A few Hindu organizations have complained that it hurt the sentiments of Brahmins. Also, a Muslim guy loving a Brahmin girl too did not go down well with some people as it indirectly supports Love Jihad. Let us see how the new decision to stream ‘Annapoorani’ in other countries works out.
