Mahanati, which is based on the rise and fall of legendary actress Savitri, has sparked a debate regarding the portrayal of Savitri and Gemini Ganesan.
A couple of days ago, Gemini Ganesan’s daughter Kamala Selvaraj expressed her dissatisfaction regarding her father’s portrayal in the film.
Now, veteran actor Rajesh, a close associate of Gemini Ganesan, has now opened up about Savitri’s life.
In a video interview, Rajesh confessed that Savitri made a wrong decision by marrying Gemini Ganesan.
He said, “Savitri was in love and she knew that Gemini Ganesan was already married. She shouldn’t have loved or married him. That’s a grave mistake on her part as Gemini Ganesan’s principles in life were different.”
In an interview, Kamala Selvaraj also accused Savitri of having multiple affairs.
Addressing the issue, Rajesh disclosed, “I would not comment about Savitri’s personal life. But, I know that MGR had, in fact, threatened a handful of people who had misbehaved with her. In doing so, he developed a bad image, but he never revealed that he did it for Savitri. The biggest irony is Savitri was never interested in acting with him.”
The film, Mahanati, also depicted that Gemini Ganesan was the one who introduced the habit of consuming liquor to Savitri.
“If somebody of a huge stature offers me a drink, I’d take it up. Likewise, Gemini offered, but Savitri continued to get addicted. I’d say it was Savitri’s fault to continue the habit of drinking,” Rajesh explained.
Mahanati, meanwhile, opened to fabulous reviews from both critics and the audience.
