DCGI’s decision to approve the vaccines developed by two Indian pharma firms, including Covishield has lightened up the day for the Pune-based vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India.Serum Institute of India’s Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla took to the Microblogging site Twitter to share his happiness for getting approval from the Drugs Controller General of India(DCGI).
“Happy new year, everyone! All the risks @SerumInstIndia took with stockpiling the vaccine, have finally paid off. COVISHIELD, India’s first COVID-19 vaccine is approved, safe, effective and ready to roll-out in the coming weeks,” his tweet reads.In another tweet, he has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Ministery of Health, ICMR, Department of Biotechnology, DCGI, and others who were involved in this.
Other than Covishield, the Drug Controller has also approved Covaxin, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech. The vaccines were approved with some restrictions.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed their happiness for the vaccine getting a nod from the Drug Controller.
