YS Jagan Mohan Reddy led YSR Congress party secured a landslide victory in the 2019 general elections and the opposition was settled with a mere 23 MLAs. With 153 MLAs in the assembly, everyone thought that Jagan would pass all his bills anonymously and even 4 out of 23 TDP MLAs supported Jagan’s government.
Then came the legislative council headache as CBN made full use of his majority. When it comes to the legislature it has become the complete opposite to the assembly. The total number of members in the Legislative Council is 58. The ruling YCP has 11 members in the council while the opposition TDP alone has 30 members.
With this, the government is sweating out for the approval of the bills coming to the council. Every bill that is coming to the council has been sent back to the assembly. This has become a big headache for the government. Even though Jagan opted for the abolition of council the Parliament didn’t take any interest.
According to the latest news, the government is not in favour of dissolving the Legislature. Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad filled the recently vacated MLC post. Two MLCs were also elected in the Governor’s quota. Based on this, it seems that the government is not in favour of dissolving the Legislative Council. The government is trying to increase the majority in the legislature, albeit somewhat late.
The ruling party is expected to get a majority in the council by June or April next year. It seems the government has decided to wait until then. But without any support from the council all the bills that are being passed in the assembly goes in vain for sure. In these situations, these sessions will be nothing but waste of time and public money but YCP are making good use of them by making CBN a laughing stock in front of the whole state.
