TDP member Varla Ramaiah has written a letter to Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswas on the matter of ignorance in the case of tonsuring the head of a Dallit man in Andhra Pradesh, in East Godavari.
Varla Ramaiah has requested Ram Vilas Paswas to bring up this issue in the Parliament in the upcoming Monsoon session, and to take duly action against the accused. The matter had gone to the President of India previously, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, and yet the YSRCP government failed to take proper action.
The YSRCP government has been alleged to have conspired with the police of East Godavari district, and have tonsure the head of a Dalit man, which is illegal and a punishable offense in India. The issue had also gone to the NHRC, but the AP government hasn’t cared to respond yet.
The tonsured man, Indugumilli Vara Prasad had also sought the President’s permission to join the maoist movement, following the tonsuring of his head. The sad fact is that the police had no proper case or reason to tonsure the head of Vara Prasad, and even did so, and the government hasn’t responded to such offensive behavior. This only solidifies the fact that the government is very much supporting all of these offenses against Dalits.
Vara Prasad belongs to Munikudali village in Seethanagaram Mandal. He was taken into custody by Seethanagaram Police in July, and the SI tonsured his head later on, on the insistence of local leaders. Vara Prasad was taken into custody in the first place because he objected to the illegal transportation of sand from his village.
Vara Prasad was doing his duty as a member of his village and was making sure that sand was not being smuggled from his village, and this is how those in power decided to reward him. Kudos to the government’s blind eye!
