Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu got emotional while speaking about the latest developments in the Upper house where the opposition MPs allegedly destroyed the sacredness of the House. He expressed deep pain at the conduct of the opposition parties MP’s on Tuesday.
Opposition parties had raised the issue of farmer protests over three central laws in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. While the issue was being debated, some members protested by waving black clothes and throwing files.
At one point, many MPs climbed the officials’ table at the centre of the Rajya Sabha and chanted anti-government slogans. The House was adjourned several times.
Describing parliament as a temple of democracy and the centre of the house as the “holy sanctum sanctorum,” Venkaiah Naidu said: “I am distressed by the way the sacredness was destroyed yesterday. When some members sat on the table, some members climbed on the table of the house, perhaps to be more visible with such acts of sacrilege.”
The Vice President added, “I have no words to convey my anguish and to condemn such acts as I spent a sleepless night…last night.”
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha was adjourned indefinitely as part of the monsoon sessions of Parliament. Speaker Om Birla today announced that the House would be adjourned indefinitely. Several key bills have already been introduced by the central government and passed by the House amid protests.
