13 On-board Air Force Plane Missing From Assam

Earlier today, an IAF transport aircraft that took off from Assam’s Jorhat with 13 people onboard has gone missing in the NorthEast over hilly terrain. The aircraft Antonov An-32 started at 12.25 pm for a remote military landing strip in Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh.

At 1 pm, the aircraft has last contacted with the crew on ground duty and the flight time between Jorhat and Mechuka is usually about 50 minutes. The Air Force has launched a search operation. Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel P Khongsai said that efforts are being made to locate the missing plane. Both Indian Army soldiers and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police are helping in the pursuit, along with helicopters.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that he spoke to Vice Chief of IAF, Air Marshal Rakesh Singh Bhadauria regarding the missing IAF AN-32 Aircraft which is overdue for some hours. “He has apprised me of the steps taken by the IAF to find the missing aircraft. I pray for the safety of all passengers on board,” he tweeted.

The flight is routed to be mountainous and heavily forested. Also, the landing and take-off to Mechuka are extremely difficult. Moreover, the bad weather, everything became inhospitable for air transport. “The aircraft may have got entangled in low clouds. Flying in these areas is fraught with a measure of uncertainty,” Air Commodore Prashant Dikshit said.
