The first half of 2017 is complete. It’s a pretty good start by Telugu cinema. Let’s dive into the past six months to review the first half of the year 2017. While Telugu Cinema has shown considerable growth compared to Last Year’s First Half, Bollywood seems to have registered degrowth this year against its previous year.
Below is a holistic view of the performance of Telugu Cinema in 2017. It includes both critical appreciation as well as Box Office parameters.
January
While the first week saw a slew of small-tickets, actual 2017 began for Tollywood from Sankranthi. Among the big-tickets films, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s comeback film Khaidi No. 150 is the opener. And the opening is remarkable. The film starring Kajal Aggarwal, directed by VV Vinayak and produced by Ram Charan has shattered the BO records. And another Sankranthi big-release Balakrishna’s Gautamiputra Satakarni is yet another winner as the historical biopic of Gautamiputra Satakarni gave a goose-bumping victory to Balayya and thus gave a big reasons for the actor’s fans to celebrate.
Another film which released alongside biggies is Sharwanand’s Shatamanam Bhavati. The film has not just overcome biggies like Khaidi No. 150 & Satakarni, but the movie went onto bag both critical acclaim along with commercial success. The film has won National Award for the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. However, the only loser at Sankranthi Box Office was R.Narayana Murthy’s Head Constable Venkataramiah. The film had struggled to find the screens and poor release had spoiled its chances at the BO.
Vishnu Manchu’s Luckunnodu is yet another disappointment. The film tanked without a trace incurring total loss to its producers. Poor writing and direction have marred the film.
