Caste Bias Clearly Visible In Nandi Panels!

The Nandi awards for Telugu films announced by the Andhra Pradesh government, the first-ever after the bifurcation of combined state, has kicked up a lot controversy.

A lot of heat and dust has been raised in the film circles as to how the juries selected the awardees unilaterally without taking the talent, success and public image of the actors in the last three years.

Several directors like Gunasekhar questioned the manner in which the entries were scrutinised and contestants were selected for the awards.

And the fans of the mega family strongly disapproved the manner in which the mega actors like Allu Arjun were ignored in the selection.

In fact, the selection of jury members itself smacks of a big scam and reflects a blatant caste bias, say the critics.

According to them, majority of the jury members were from the same community (read: Kamma) as that of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Take for instance, the 12-member selection committee for the Nandi awards-2014 comprises as many as seven Kammas including: veteran actor-producer Giri Babu (chairman), producer T Prasanna Kumar, journalist K Uma Maheshwar Rao, music director M M Sreelekha, director Ram Prasad, actor and producer Madala Ravi and producer Narasimha Rao.

And the five-member selection committee for NTR National Film Award, B N Reddy award, Nagireddy and Chakrapani award and Raghupathi Venkaiah award also comprises three Kammas, including chairman Nandamuri Balakrishna, MP Murali Mohan and member A Ramesh Prasad.

Needless to say, majority of the awards for this year have gone to Kammas, with Balakrishna’s film Legend bagging the maximum number of Nandis!
