In what is a big embarrassment to Bharatiya Janata Party, the Telugu Desam Party cadres made a lightening attack on the convoy of BJP national president and MP Amit Shah on Friday at Alipiri, the foothills of Tirumala.
The BJP president, who came to Tirumala to pray Lord Venkateshwara after his hectic electioneering in Karnataka, had to face the heat of the Telugu people. While he entered the temple complex to have the darshan, devotees in the queue complex raised slogans in support of special category status and against the BJP.
And as he was returning to Tirupati down the hills, scores of TDP workers wearing black badges and holding party flags blocked Shah’s convoy at the Alipiri check-post by squatting on the road.Others tried to storm the vehicles raising slogans – “Amit Shah Go Back,” “We want justice” and “Give us special category status.”
The BJP activists, following their party president’s convoy, tried to resist the TDP workers, resulting in clashes between the two groups. One of the TDP workers hurled stones at the convoy resulting in breaking of windshield of one of the vehicles.
The security personnel in the convoy and also the police forces at the check-post immediately rushed to the spot and quickly dispersed the agitating TDP activists, providing safe passage for Shah’s convoy. It was definitely a major embarrassment to the BJP chief as he thought the party could have smooth sailing in the state.
