Polling begins in Andhra Pradesh

Voting for 175 assembly constituencies and 25 Parliamentary seats began at 7 am today in Andhra Pradesh, which will be held in a single phase. This is first election to the AP assembly after its bifurcation in 2014. The battle is essentially between the Telugu Desam Party which is seeking a re-election, YSR Congress Party which is hoping to bring about a change and Jana Sena which is a new entrant into Telugu politics.

Nearly 2,118 candidates are in fray for the 175 assembly constituencies. The ruling TDP for the first in over three decades will be contesting elections without any alliance partner. As polling began across all the constituencies, 6,120 polling stations have been set up in the state, of them 8,514 are said to be critical.

Many senior citizens and morning walkers were seeing turning up at the polling booths even before polling booths had opened in the state. However, in Visakhapatnam and few constituencies in Ananthapur, West Godavari, Guntur and Vijayawada had reported EVM failures and technical glitches which have delayed voting.

Meanwhile, TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu along with his family members has cast his vote, while other leaders such as YSRCP Chief Y.S Jaganmohan Reddy, BJP’s Kanna Lakshminarayana, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Ashok Gajapathi Raju along with family and others cast his vote. Surprisingly, a Jana Sena Party candidate was arrested in Andhra Pradesh after he resorted to damaging an electronic voting machine.
