At a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying its best to keep the “Modi Wave” alive and ensure that the saffron party retains its position, the Congress is making much require headway and reviving itself faster than ever before in this election season. The entry of Priyanka Gandhi, sister of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, from one of India’s most popular political families came at a time which was dubbed as her mother Sonia Gandhi’s exit from active politics.
With the popularity that Priyanka enjoys beyond Rahul’s and a crowd-pulling personality, the Congress poses a formidable challenge to the BJP’s gameplay. With Congress seeing an upward movement by defeating BJP and forming its government in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, the party definitely has been witnessing more acceptance among people compared to its position in the 2014 elections.
It is a well-known fact that Priyanka’s official entry into the party was carefully planned by the Congress High Command so as to elevate Rahul and his capability in boosting the party’s prospects and attributing the results of the three crucial wins in Northern states to him. It was also a ploy to ensure that the party clearly reflects that there are no two power Centres and that Rahul is its only boss.
As Priyanka is now seen as a game-changer in Indian politics and could some day become the second woman Prime Minister of this country, following her grandmother Indira’s footsteps, many political observers opine that the Congress bungled its strategy of her official foray which was delayed. Had Priyanka forayed into the party a year ahead, the Congress would have made great progress in gaining popularity which could have posed a serious threat to the Saffron Party’s prospects at the Centre.
Additionally, the SP-BSP alliance has also worked in favour of Congress, in hitting back at the BJP. Over the last few months, not only has Priyanka managed to charm people with her trait of keeping in touch with the cadre but also in pulling up those who are rude to party workers. She minces no words in taking the bull by its horn.
Some in the political circles also say that she could have given a tough fight to PM Modi if she made an early entry even when it came to photo-ops as her camera-friendly personality would have garnered more publicity and broke the Internet than Modi’s antics.
