‘Samajavaragamana’ – The word has an eternal magic since decades

There are a plethora of songs that we consider to be unforgettable, greatest of all times and tunes that never goes out of style. Not to mention, the lyrics of the song is one of the pivotal reasons to become popular. Among many, comes one song lyrics that are still lingering in every music lover’s heart. The word ‘Samajavaragamana’ has been redefining with every passing decade. And yes, these lyrics are best penned in the history because it is finding success again and again with repeated cut and paste lyrics, and nothing has stopped songs starting with the lyric ‘Samajavaragamana’ from becoming hits.

Let’s talk about the meaning of the popular lyric – Samajavaragamana. Samaja – elephant, vara – of high quality, king or leader, gamana – gait. So, a person with a gait like that of a royal elephant (with a lot of grace) is addressed as Samaja Vara Gamana. Saint Tyagaraja Swami addresses Sri Rama/Krishna that way in one of his most famous Kriti – Samaja vara gamana Sadhu Hrit Sarasaabja…

However, a modified form of that was used in the old and epic film Sankarabharanam. It starts with the original form and then deviates to suit the picturisation. The keertana by Tyagaraja was in Sanskrit and it became famous than before after reciting it by late Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna. The songs, both Tyagaraja’s and Sankarabharanam, used to be played on a loop in most of the weddings back then and they were considered the purest form of music. Composed in Hindola raga, the song has a lot of compositions with the pentatonic scale.

Now, the song from Sankarabharanam, directed by K.Vishwanath and composed by KV Mahadevan has later passed on to film Lawyer Suhasini under SP Balu’s music direction, nearly after seven years. The song with the same lyrics start with Samajavaragamana Divini tirugu merupu lalana..

Later, the wordings became more and more popular among newer generations with SV Krishna Reddy’s film, Top Hero, starring Balakrishna. Samajavaragamana has been totally transformed from class to mass meaning, getting valuable on its own merit. The song was ‘Samajavaragamana hoi hoi yenniyello yenniyello’.

Now, the latest Allu Arjun’s ‘Ala Vaikuntapuram lo’ has once again Samajavargamanam sung by singer Sid Sriram with Thaman’s composition and the song has been inscribed tough to get out of our heads. The word has been covered countless times and it is still not going out of style and will never! Ala Vaikuntapuram lo is once again bringing the Telugu literature into the limelight with generation-conscious or interests.

Kudos to all the music directions who utilized the precious word so far as they delightedly succeeded in making listeners understand the several kinds of feelings that the song expresses. Definitely, one of the greatest one-word putdowns ever written!
