In a major financial relief for H-1B visa holders’ children in the US, the state of New Jersey is bringing the legislation to make the college and university education affordable at lower costs.
This legislation turns out to be a huge relief for Indian H-1B holders whose children are going to go to colleges in New Jersey as they qualify for in-state tuition at public institutions. The legislation S2555 is signed by the governor Phil Murphy.
While the scrutiny and strict immigration laws have been the reason for many H-1B holders, mostly working for IT, being sent back to their countries, this legislation turns out to be a financial relief for the eligible.
Well, the students who graduated from a New Jersey school and have attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years are eligible for in-state tuition, also given that their parents or guardians hold an H-1B visa.
Indians living in the US largely comprise of IT professionals and they pay large amounts of taxes along with social security contributions. The amounts which most of them never would be able to use as they had to return to India before they reach the criteria to receive the benefits. So this tuition fee exemption comes as of the major benefits for H-1B holders.
It is a known fact that the government provides free education from kindergarten to 12th grade in public schools, while education for immigrant children at universities is much pricey.
