What could be seen as a significant change in its history, the Telugu Desam Party founded by Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao will not have a legislature party in Telangana Assembly for the first time since its inception. This indicates a shift in the way politics in Telugu States have changed in the last three decades.
The Telugu Desam Party won only two seats in Telangana elections from Sathhupally and Ashwaraopeta whose candidates are Sandra Venkata Veeraiah and M. Nageshwara Rao. This means that the party cannot have a Legislature Party as it has less than five MLAs in the Assembly. While Nageswara Rao took oath as an MLA in Telangana Assembly yesteryday, Sandra Veeraiah did not attend the first session.
Speculation has been rife that Sandra is planning to jump to the TRS as he could be offered a Cabinet berth or a post equal to that of a Cabinet rank and be saved from the cash-for-vote scam in which he is one of the accused. Ever since Telugu Desam Party’s inception, the party has thrived successfully, sometimes in power and sometimes in Opposition, in United Andhra Pradesh.
However, the bifurcation of the state has divided the Telugu and has scarred their sentiments, evoking unnecessary bitterness between the Seemandhra and Telangana people. In the process of winning in Telangana, the TRS has added to the vitriolic attacks with its anti-Andhra statements and successfully portraying TDP as an “Andhra party” in Telangana.
While this has worked in favour of the party by raking up the Telangana sentiment, it has dented the image of TDP in the state, eventually leading to the current state. Incidentally, today also happens to be the death anniversary of NTR, the founder of the party and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Will the party be able to revive itself in future? We will have to wait another five year to know that
