Kohli In Trouble Over Argument With Umpire

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is at it again. Kohli had a heated argument with on-field umpires during India versus Bangladesh match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup on Tuesday.

Kohli had lost his cool when there was a huge appeal for Leg Before Wicket (LBW) in the second ball of the 11th over bowled by Shami. Shami’s ball had hit Soumya Sarkar’s pads who was at the strike and there was an appeal from India. While the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus had given not out, Kohli had opted for the DRS (Decision Review System) when only 5 seconds were remaining.

Third umpire Aleem Dar had checked Ultraedge and felt there was an inside edge. Hence, he didn’t go beyond Ultraedge and didn’t check ball-tracking. Therefore, the third umpire did not overturn the field umpire Marais Erasmus’ decision of not out. Kohli was irked as the only review was wasted. Had the third umpire used ball-tracking, it would have been umpire’s call touching the leg stump. Teams do not lose reviews on umpire’s call.

During the incident, MS Dhoni, India’s best judge of the DRS, was not in the field and went for a short break. Rishabh Pant was wicket keeper in the absence of Dhoni.

Earlier during India versus Afghanistan match in World Cup 2019, Kohli had an argument with umpires. Kohli was fined 25 percent of his match fee for excessive appealing against Afghanistan. Kohli already has 2 demerit points – one was added during a Test match against South Africa in January 2018.

Since the introduction of the Revised Code in September 2016, when a player arrives at four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player. Hence, Kohli has to be more careful before arguing with field umpires.
