The BJP MP and an ex-Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde made a controversial statement on Saturday at a public event in Karnataka. He said that the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom struggle was nothing but just a “drama”. He added that his “blood boils” when people call Gandhi as ‘Mahatma’.
Now, his party BJP’s one of the top leadership is upset with Anantkumar’s statement on Gandhi and he has been asked to issue an unconditional apology. Anantkumar also said that the entire freedom movement was “staged”. “None of them deserve to be called leaders. The freedom struggle was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight but an adjustment freedom struggle,” said the Karnataka BJP MP.
Calling Mahatma Gandhi’s hunger strikes and satyagraha movement a “drama” brought in the outrage asking him to apologize for his baseless statements. Not only this, Anantkumar added that the British did not leave the country because of satyagraha. They gave independence to India out of frustration.
He pointed out how Indian history has been written manipulatively and it irks him to hear public calling Gandhi as Mahatma. Netizens fired on the MP and BJP for using anti-national sentiments and insulting India and its freedom fighters.
