Gone are the days where one could lift scenes from Hollywood movies and remake them in Telugu as is. Though the likes of Trivikram and Karunakaran often did it, the legal action taken by Hollywood filmmakers in recent times has set things right in the Telugu industry.
While Nagarjuna’s all time classic “Manmadhudu” itself is based on Mel Gibson’s ‘What Women Want’, without the fantasy elements, the actor is said to have got smitten by this French movie now. And the moment he saw it, he has decided on the director and bought the rights of the movie to make it happen as Manmadhudu 2.
At the trailer launch event of the movie, today Nagarjuna confirmed that Manmadhudu 2 is based on 2006 French film “Prête-moi ta main” (I Do and Rent A Wife, are international titles). To put it more clear, Nag says, “We have just taken the character from Manmadhudu, but the film is a pure remake but not any sequel to the old film” He stated that they have acquired the rights from Studio Canal and after picking up director Rahul Ravindran after watching his debut directorial Chi Law Sow.
At a time when films like Oh Baby are remade from foreign films, surely this move encourages even others to buy rights and make movies. The likes of Jabardasth and Agnyaathavasi are freemakes of some hit films, and still facing the legal issues.
