Opinion: Why VD Konda Is Wrong

Vijay Devarakonda following a vehement backlash over referring to legendary actress Savitri as a ‘cool chick’ gave an elaborate explanation saying that he did not mean any disrespect. He also tried to justify himself by drawing a comparison between the meaning of the Indian word ‘Mard’ and the French word Merde. However, chick is a derogatory way of referring to a woman.

The Cambridge online dictionary clearly states that the word chick means ‘a young woman. This word is considered offensive by many women.’ Why is this word considered offensive?Because, this is nothing but objectifying women. Besides, as a child in the industry, he should learn to cultivate respect for his seniors.

Imagine the reaction if a corporator walks up to a Chief Minister and says, “Hey dude! What’s up?”It would take the better part of two decades at least for someone like VD Konda to achieve even a fraction of what Savitri did with her acting prowess. And does he not have the common sense to realise that this is not the way to address a departed legend?

Maybe, he is yet to come out of the Arjun Reddy hangover or this could be another publicity ploy. Just like his usage of a cuss word prior to the release of Arjun Reddy helped the film, maybe, he has intentionally sparked off another controversy around Mahanati, this time.

The only parameter is this: Can he apply he the same term to any of the women from his family? Period!
