Public representatives are sent to the houses to raise their voices on the issues faced by the public and fight for this. Houses of Representatives are seen as temples of democracy as elected members will be the people’s voice. But the sensational claims made by a lady lawmaker raise doubt about whether Parliament can also not stop sexual assaults.
Independent Senator from Australia Lidia Thorpe made sensational allegations that she was subjected to sexual comments and was touched inappropriately by powerful men. Her words stirred a considerable political controversy and people are talking about the sensational claims she made.
Lidia Thorpe gave her statement to the Senate chamber on Thursday and made sensational allegations. Recalling her alleged incidents, the independent senate said that the Australian Parliament House is not a safe place for women to work. After Thorpe’s allegations, Greens senator Larissa Waters said that she is standing with her and supported her in this.
Lidia Thorpe alleged that Liberal party senator David Van sexually harassed her and she did not feel safe in the house. He used to follow me everywhere and made inappropriate advancements. I could not even come out of the cabin, she said.
The senator also said that she used to see if Van was around and then come out of the cabin. I used to make sure that someone would be with me when I was walking in the Parliament premises. Others were also subjected to the same, but they are not coming out in fear she said.
The allegations the lady Senator had sent shocking waves in the Liberal Party. Opposition leader Peter Dutton announced that David Van was removed from the party over the allegations. However, David Van denied all the allegations against him.
