Drishyam 3 Telugu Release Hit by Legal Issue

Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, which is set for a direct-to-digital release, has landed in controversy over its Telugu version. While the first two installments of the franchise were remade in Telugu, the third part was planned to be released as a dubbed version instead.
However, director Sripriya, who helmed the Telugu remake of the original Drishyam, along with her company Rajkumar Theatres Private Limited, approached the Madras High Court claiming ownership of the Telugu rights. Sripriya and Rajkumar Sethupathi filed a petition seeking a permanent injunction against the release of the Telugu-dubbed version.
In a recent development, the Madras High Court passed an interim order restraining the makers of the Malayalam film from releasing the Telugu version on OTT platforms. Since the movie is scheduled for release on the 18th of this month, Justice K. Kumaresh Babu issued the order after observing that none of the respondents had appeared before the court despite being served private notices.
Taking note of the imminent OTT release, the court granted an interim injunction preventing the respondents and their representatives from exploiting the applicant’s alleged copyrights by releasing the Telugu version.
Interestingly, while Drishyam 2 was released during the COVID-19 period without any such dispute, the reason why the third installment was not remade in Telugu remains unclear. The legal battle has now cast uncertainty over the Telugu release of Drishyam 3.
