Adaa Sharma Reacts to Peddi Controversy

Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s pan-India film Peddi, directed by Buchi Babu Sana, recently emerged as a major box-office success. However, despite its strong commercial performance, the film also found itself at the center of controversy following criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character.
A section of audiences and social media users accused the film of depicting women in an objectionable manner, leading to widespread debate online. In response to the backlash, director Buchi Babu Sana publicly apologized and later removed the scenes that had drawn criticism.
Amid the ongoing discussion, actress Adaa Sharma was recently asked about the controversy during promotions for her upcoming film Governor. While addressing the media, she chose not to comment directly on Peddi or Janhvi Kapoor’s character.
Adaa explained that she had neither acted in nor watched the film and therefore felt it would be inappropriate to offer an opinion on a subject she was not fully familiar with. She also noted that her journey in the industry has been very different, having entered cinema without any film background, and felt that commenting on another actor’s experience might not be fair in the given context.
However, the actress did share her broader views on responsibility in filmmaking. According to Adaa, accountability does not rest solely with actors or actresses. Everyone involved in the creative process—including directors, writers, and even technicians responsible for seemingly minor aspects of a production—must make thoughtful decisions.
She pointed out that a single poor creative choice can sometimes have far-reaching consequences, influencing audiences in unexpected ways. For that reason, she believes every contributor to a film carries a certain level of responsibility.
Adaa also stressed that meaningful change in cinema does not happen overnight. Comparing it to healthy habits, she said that just as the benefits of good nutrition become visible only over time, positive changes in storytelling and character representation gradually shape audience perceptions.
She emphasized the importance of portraying women as multi-dimensional individuals rather than reducing them to a single stereotype. According to her, female characters should reflect the many qualities women possess in real life—strength, intelligence, humor, vulnerability, and emotional depth.
Meanwhile, despite the controversy, Peddi continues to perform strongly at the box office. The film has reportedly crossed the ₹150 crore mark worldwide, adding another successful title to Ram Charan’s filmography.
While the commercial success of the film remains unquestioned, the debate surrounding Janhvi Kapoor’s characterization continues to generate discussion. In that context, Adaa Sharma’s remarks have added a wider perspective to the conversation, highlighting the need for responsible storytelling and more balanced character portrayals in Indian cinema.
