Deepika Padukone Hails ICC’s Post-Pregnancy Return Guidelines for Women Cricketers

coaches, ensuring a safe and supportive transition back to elite-level cricket. With women’s cricket becoming increasingly professional, more athletes are balancing motherhood with ongoing playing careers, making such policies increasingly significant.
The ICC stated that the initiative aligns with its broader commitment to player welfare, health, and the continued growth of women’s cricket. It also forms part of the “100% Cricket” movement, which focuses on educating players and normalising conversations around women’s health in sport.
The guidelines introduce a “6 Rs” framework — Ready, Review, Restore, Recondition, Return, and Refine — which outlines a step-by-step pathway from post-pregnancy recovery to full competitive return. This includes medical evaluation, gradual training progression, cricket-specific conditioning, and ongoing performance monitoring.
The framework also highlights practical support measures such as flexible training environments, access to medical and fitness facilities, childcare considerations, and travel assistance wherever possible.
According to ICC Medical Advisory Committee member and Australia team doctor Dr. Philippa Inge, the guidelines are designed to ensure that motherhood does not mark the end of a player’s career, but instead provides a structured pathway for a safe return to elite cricket. She emphasized that the framework is adaptable to the needs of different member nations and individual athletes.
Overall, the ICC’s initiative is being seen as a progressive and historic step toward supporting women athletes and strengthening inclusivity in international cricket.
