Prithviraj Needs a Strong Malayalam Comeback

Prithviraj Sukumaran remains one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile stars and is also set to play the primary antagonist in S. S. Rajamouli’s highly anticipated Varanasi. However, his latest release, I, Nobody, has failed to live up to expectations at the box office. Despite generating decent pre-release buzz and receiving a Telugu dubbed release, the film is heading toward a disappointing theatrical run. Its performance in Kerala has also been underwhelming.
Known for experimenting with unconventional stories, Prithviraj has often earned praise for his performances even when the films themselves have struggled commercially. His recent solo outings, including Pallichattambi and Sarzameen, failed to create the expected impact at the box office, continuing a worrying trend despite positive feedback for his acting.
Over the years, Prithviraj has successfully expanded his presence beyond Malayalam cinema by taking up significant roles in multiple languages. While his performances in other industries continue to win appreciation, his recent Malayalam projects have not translated into commercial success. As both an actor and filmmaker, he has built a reputation for supporting quality cinema, making the recent string of underperformers even more noticeable.
With Varanasi, Prithviraj is expected to reach an even wider audience, but the film’s release is still some time away. Until then, his immediate challenge is to strengthen his standing in Malayalam cinema by being more selective with his scripts. Choosing content-driven projects over back-to-back releases could help him regain the consistency that has defined the best phases of his career.
