Shankar Faces Career Pressure Amid Recent Flops and Upcoming Projects

May 28, 2026

Director Shankar, once celebrated for delivering visually grand films with strong social messages and technical brilliance, is currently facing a challenging phase in his career with a series of underwhelming outcomes. Known for iconic blockbusters like Gentleman, Oke Okkadu, Aparichithudu, and Robot, Shankar has not been able to recreate the same success level since Robot, sparking widespread discussion about his recent track record.

The situation appears to have shifted significantly after the release of Indian 2. Despite high expectations, the film failed to impress audiences to the expected extent, and its impact seems to have carried over to Indian 3, which has no clear release timeline yet. Reports of ongoing issues with production house Lyca have further added uncertainty around the project, affecting Shankar’s upcoming lineup.

At the same time, Game Changer, starring Ram Charan, also drew criticism. The project faced delays, reportedly due to Shankar simultaneously handling Indian 2. Upon its grand release, the film underperformed at the box office, raising questions about Shankar’s current market standing and reliability in big-budget filmmaking.

In this context, concerns are being raised that Shankar’s high-budget approach is becoming a risk for producers. Industry observers suggest that he may need to focus on content-driven mid-range films to regain his strong footing. A solid comeback success could restore confidence among producers and top actors, potentially paving the way for his ambitious dream project Velpari, based on a popular novel.

While pre-production work on Velpari is reportedly underway, there has been no official announcement, and discussions continue about whether it is the right time for such a massive project. Meanwhile, speculation is also growing in the industry about Shankar potentially playing a villain role in an upcoming Rajinikanth film being produced by Kamal Haasan, adding further curiosity around his next move.

Ultimately, Shankar’s next decision is being seen as crucial, as it may define the next phase of his illustrious career in Indian cinema.
