Varanasi’s Ramayana Twist Sparks Curiosity
June 7, 2026
Rajamouli’s ambitious adventure film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, continues to generate massive excitement, and a fresh revelation about its storyline has now sparked even greater curiosity among movie lovers.
Ever since the project was announced, speculation has surrounded its mythological elements, particularly reports suggesting that the film would feature a grand 30-minute sequence inspired by the Ramayana. Many assumed the episode would revolve around the iconic battle between Lord Rama and Ravana, a story that has been portrayed numerous times on both the big and small screens.
However, writer Vijayendra Prasad has now shared an intriguing detail that changes the narrative entirely. According to him, the much-discussed war sequence is not centered on Rama’s battle with Ravana. Instead, it focuses on the clash between Rama and Kumbhakarna, one of the most powerful and fascinating characters from the epic.
The revelation has immediately caught the attention of fans, as Kumbhakarna’s story has rarely been explored in depth on screen. Vijayendra Prasad reportedly described the sequence as visually spectacular and emotionally engaging, raising expectations for how Rajamouli will bring the legendary warrior to life.
The update has also led to fresh discussions about Prithviraj Sukumaran’s role in the film. Reports suggest that his character is named Kumbha, and his first-look poster, which featured him in a wheelchair, had already triggered widespread speculation.
Many fans now believe the film could feature a creative parallel between mythology and the present day. In the Ramayana, Kumbhakarna suffers devastating injuries during his battle with Rama. This has led to theories that Prithviraj’s modern-day character Kumbha may symbolically represent Kumbhakarna, while Mahesh Babu’s character Rudra could embody qualities associated with Rama.
If these speculations prove accurate, audiences may witness Prithviraj portraying Kumbhakarna in the mythological portions, while Mahesh Babu could appear as Rama during the epic flashback sequences. Such a narrative structure would align perfectly with Rajamouli’s signature storytelling style, where mythology, symbolism, and contemporary narratives often blend seamlessly.
While the makers have not officially confirmed these story details, the latest revelations have certainly added another layer of intrigue to what is already one of the most anticipated Indian films in production. With Rajamouli at the helm and a stellar cast on board, Varanasi continues to fuel expectations of a cinematic spectacle unlike anything seen before.
