Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued an unconditional apology after making a crude remark about pop star Kylie Minogue during a comedy podcast interview, sparking criticism from women’s rights groups and opposition leaders.
The controversy began when podcast host Nikki Osborne asked Albanese to choose which of three Australian female celebrities he would marry, date, or have sex with as part of a light-hearted game. The Prime Minister initially declined to answer, saying he had recently gotten married. However, after Osborne continued the questioning by asking who he would choose if his marriage ended, Albanese responded by naming Kylie Minogue.
Osborne then jokingly asked whether he would “marry Kylie, date her, and have sex with her,” to which Albanese replied, “All of the above.” The exchange quickly drew backlash after clips from the interview circulated online.
Opposition politicians strongly criticised the Prime Minister’s remarks. Senator Sarah Henderson described the comments as disrespectful to women, embarrassing for Australians, and unbecoming of the country’s highest elected office.
Responding to the growing criticism, Albanese released a statement on Monday offering an unreserved apology. “I apologise unequivocally for the comments,” he said.
Kylie Minogue’s spokesperson did not immediately comment on the controversy.
Australia is well known for its relaxed and informal political culture, with politicians often taking part in light-hearted interviews that include questions about popular culture and entertainment. However, Albanese’s remarks have reignited debate over the boundaries of humour and the standards expected from public office holders.
