Obsession Opens Slow in India Despite Global ₹1000 Cr Success

After creating a global sensation, Obsession has finally released in Indian theatres amid strong anticipation and significant social media buzz. Despite its massive international success, the film opened to an average response in India, collecting around ₹2 crore on its first day.

The film’s performance in the Indian market appears to be facing certain challenges. Unlike many successful international releases, Obsession was released only in English, without dubbed versions in major Indian languages. In several locations, even subtitles were reportedly unavailable, which may have limited its reach among wider audiences.

Adding to these concerns are reports suggesting that the film could arrive on OTT platforms as early as June 2. If true, the early digital release may impact theatre footfall further, as casual viewers might prefer to wait for streaming availability instead of watching it in cinemas.

Despite its modest start in India, the film’s global performance remains extraordinary. Made on a relatively small budget of around ₹7 crore, Obsession has reportedly crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark worldwide, making it one of the most profitable films in recent times. Only a select few global blockbusters have achieved similar milestones.

The coming weekend will be crucial in determining whether the film can gain momentum in India through positive word-of-mouth and eventually match its international success on the domestic front.
