Did Vijayasai Help Nathwani Win in Jharkhand?

If reports circulating in sections of the national media are accurate, former YSR Congress Party leader and ex-Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy is believed to have played a key behind-the-scenes role in businessman and MP Parimal Nathwani’s surprising victory in the Rajya Sabha elections from Jharkhand.

Since quitting the YSRCP and stepping away from active politics, Vijayasai Reddy had largely maintained a low profile. However, his name has resurfaced following Nathwani’s success in the recently concluded Upper House polls.

Nathwani had earlier entered the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh with the backing of the YSRCP during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. Following the change in political landscape after the NDA came to power in Andhra Pradesh, he was unable to secure another term from the state and shifted his focus to Jharkhand.

Political analysts point out that the ruling alliance in Jharkhand had initially planned to divide the two available seats between the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). However, Nathwani’s last-minute entry into the contest reportedly altered the equations.

Interestingly, media reports had earlier suggested that Vijayasai Reddy himself was exploring the possibility of contesting the election before deciding against it. Speculation later emerged that his involvement was aimed at ensuring Nathwani’s victory.

With all 81 MLAs casting their votes, Nathwani required 28 first-preference votes to win. He reportedly secured exactly that number, while Congress nominee Pranav Jha could manage only 20 votes and suffered a heavy defeat.

Political circles in Delhi and Ranchi are now rife with speculation that Vijayasai Reddy played an instrumental role in securing the additional support needed for Nathwani’s triumph.

According to these reports, the former YSRCP leader remained active in Ranchi during the election process and is believed to have helped Nathwani garner support beyond the BJP’s committed votes, besides facilitating cross-voting from some legislators belonging to the ruling alliance.

The episode has also triggered fresh speculation over Vijayasai Reddy’s future political course and whether the developments could eventually pave the way for his entry into the BJP.
