Deewana Review: Twist Wins
Youth-centric love stories have been finding increasing acceptance among audiences lately. After the success of films like “Youth” and “Vazha 2,” “Deewana” arrives with a similar backdrop, but does it have enough freshness to leave an impression?
Story
Munna (Harshith Reddy), an intermediate dropout from a financially struggling family in Hyderabad, leads a carefree life with his close friends. During a visit to a Mee Seva center, he meets Ammu (Smeha Manimegalai) and falls for her instantly.
Despite his repeated attempts to win her over, Ammu turns him down and asks him to stay away. Eventually, she gives him a challenge—she will accept his love only if he secures a government job. She also insists that he should neither meet nor contact her until he achieves that goal.
Determined to prove himself, Munna begins an uphill journey, only to discover that changing his life is far more difficult than he imagined. Along the way, several unexpected revelations alter his understanding of love, family, and responsibility.
Will Munna fulfill his dream? What truth lies behind Ammu’s unusual condition?
Performances
Harshith Reddy fits naturally into the role of Munna. He convincingly portrays the transformation from an aimless youngster to a more mature and responsible individual. His emotional scenes are effective, and his dialogue delivery feels effortless.
Smeha Manimegalai brings charm and sincerity to her character. Once the narrative reveals more about her role, she gets ample scope to display her acting abilities. The actress playing her friend also performs well.
Veteran actors Naresh and Jhansi shine as Munna’s parents, bringing authenticity to the family scenes. Venu Yeldandi makes an impact despite limited screen time, while Raghu delivers an adequate performance.
Technical Aspects
Music is undoubtedly one of the film’s biggest strengths. Songs like “Tella Pori,” “Idi Prema,” and “Dostulam” blend well with the narrative and leave a lasting impression. Though a few compositions carry shades reminiscent of “Arjun Reddy,” they work effectively within the film’s mood.
The cinematography captures Hyderabad’s local flavor convincingly. However, the editing in the second half could have been sharper, as some portions feel stretched.
Highlights
- Powerful interval twist
- Emotionally satisfying climax
- Meaningful message about life and responsibility
- Strong family and friendship emotions
Drawbacks
- Slow pace in the latter half
- A few convenient and illogical sequences
- Excessive sentiment in some portions
Analysis
“Deewana” starts off like a routine youthful romance featuring a directionless youngster chasing the girl he loves. The initial portions are filled with familiar humor and local flavor, making the proceedings appear predictable.
However, the narrative gradually hints at something deeper. The hero’s interactions with the police, his relentless pursuit of Ammu, and the subtle shift in tone prepare the audience for an unexpected turn.
The interval block completely changes the perception of the story and becomes the film’s biggest asset. It adds emotional depth and gives new meaning to several earlier scenes.
The second half focuses on Munna’s transformation, his struggle to secure a government job, and his growing realization of the sacrifices made by his parents and friends. Though some episodes feel stretched and overly sentimental, the emotional climax brings the story back on track.
What works in favor of “Deewana” is that it treats a familiar love story with maturity and responsibility. The film effectively blends romance, friendship, and family emotions, while the heroine-related twist offers a refreshing angle rarely explored in Telugu cinema.
Verdict
“Deewana” may not be a flawless film, but its emotional depth, strong interval twist, and heartfelt message make it an engaging watch. Despite a few pacing issues and melodramatic moments, it succeeds in delivering a satisfying experience.
Bottomline: A neat emotional drama with a refreshing twist.
