Former UP Minister gets jail for life in rape case

Former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prajapati has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a gang rape case. The former Samajwadi Party minister and his two accomplices – Ashok Tiwari and Ashish Shukla – have been sentenced to life on charges of gang rape. Along with the jail sentence, the court also slapped Rs 2 lakh fine on the trio.

A special court in Lucknow sentenced them in connection with the Chitrakoot rape case on Friday.

Gayatri Prajapati was a key member of Akhilesh Yadav’s Cabinet, holding portfolios of the transport and mining ministries. He was arrested in March 2017 on charges of raping the woman and trying to rape her minor daughter as well.

After the registration of the FIR on February 18, 2017, Prajapati was arrested in March and had been in jail ever since then.
