Kamal Haasan Calls for Cost Discipline in Film Industry Amid Rising Expenses

Veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has issued a strongly worded statement highlighting the rising economic pressure on the Indian film industry amid ongoing global uncertainty and increasing production costs.
In his note, Kamal pointed out how escalating fuel, logistics and energy expenses are directly affecting film production at a time when the industry is still recovering unevenly. He cautioned that continued inflation could also influence audience spending patterns and ultimately impact theatrical business in the coming months.
Emphasising the need for responsible filmmaking, Kamal stressed that any cost correction should not come at the expense of workers, technicians and daily wage earners. Instead, he called for eliminating avoidable waste, reducing inflated entourage culture, avoiding unnecessary foreign schedules, and improving production planning at the ground level.
In a widely discussed remark, he questioned why every love story needs to be set in Paris and why honeymoon sequences must necessarily end in Switzerland, urging filmmakers to trust Indian locations and explore domestic landscapes more creatively.
Kamal also appealed for a broader industry-wide dialogue involving producers, actors, exhibitors, OTT platforms, and unions to collectively address the growing financial challenges and work towards a more sustainable model for cinema.
While he strongly addressed issues of production efficiency and spending discipline, Kamal did not directly comment on the rising remuneration of top stars, which many producers consider one of the key cost pressures in big-budget filmmaking. His statement, however, has sparked discussion across the industry on whether leading actors and stakeholders should also participate in recalibrating fees to ensure long-term stability in theatrical cinema.
